Where it all began

Kalilangan Festival marks the founding anniversary of General Santos City, situated in Region 12 alongside Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sarangani, and Sultan Kudarat. This coastal city lies in southern Mindanao, overlooking the Sarangani Bay.

Historically, the city was known as Buayan, a territory of the municipality of Glan. Before Spanish colonization, the indigenous B’laan people, or Dadiangas, called this place home.

The transformation began when the National Land Settlement Administration (NLSA) designated Buayan for resettling Christian Filipinos. On February 11, 1939, President Manuel L. Quezon’s Proclamation No. 383 allowed migration to the village of Lagao.

The significant date, February 27, 1939, saw the arrival of the first 62 Christian settlers via the ship Basilan, led by General Paulino Santos. This date is now celebrated as the city’s founding day through the Kalilangan Festival. Over the years, more settlers followed.

Buayan gained independence as a municipal district on October 11, 1940, with Datu Sharif Zainal Abedin as its first mayor. Post-war, it incorporated the municipality of Glan on August 18, 1947.

The name change to General Santos occurred on June 15, 1954, in honor of General Paulino Santos, the man behind the Christian migration. This was formalized by Republic Act No. 1107.

Finally, on June 15, 1968, the area was recognized as a city through Republic Act No. 5412, with the official inauguration on September 5 of the same year.
